Once again, it has been a weekend full of great sporting moments, thrilling matches and for some, not the result they wanted.
However, that is what makes the world of sport so intriguing and exciting; you never know what’s going to happen.
Firstly, the highlight of the weekend had to be the Springboks thrashing Argentina. And when I say thrashing, I mean completely destroyed. The Boks were leading from early on and by half time the score was already 26-6 to the Boks. All in all, the Springboks managed 9 tries in the 80 minutes!
The real pleasure of the Boks game was watching scrumhalf Fourie du Preez back in action for his country – a man that definitely greatly contributed to the Boks’ eventually victory of 73-13!
The Springbok game was preceded – in the same, FNB stadium in Soweto – by a Bafana Bafana game against Burkina Faso. The fact that both the national rugby and soccer teams played on the same day in the same stadium, was part of the Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day, in honour of the ailing hero. It truly was a culmination of cultures all rooting for one country.
Bafana also surprised many by winning their match against Burkina Faso. The South African soccer stars scored one goal in each half, bringing their winning score to 2-0.
On to more international news; Rafael Nadal has won the Cincinnati Masters – his second victory in a row, after he took the crown in Canada too at the Montreal Masters. Nadal beat American John Isner 7-6 (10/8), 7-6 (7/3), and is now the firm favourite for the title of champion at the US Open.
Across the pond, in Premier League news, current champions Manchester United had a dream start to their campaign, while Arsene Wenger’s Gunners left the pitch rather upset.
Arsenal was left deflated after their embarrassing 3-1 home loss against Aston Villa on Saturday. However, the Red Devils proved why they are the reigning champs, and beat Swansea 4-1 in their season opener. Robin van Persie and Danny Wellbeck both had exceptional games, with each scoring 2 goals.
Once again, a fantastic weekend of sport – with high’s and low’s and a lot more to look forward to!
